New stamp set: Urban font

Did you notice?
Several weeks ago I added a new font to our font page!
Our new urban font is my new favorite.
It's not a tiny font so it won't work on our original family circle necklace,
but it will work on the large family circle,
and most of our other designs.

New, our Angel Memorial Necklace

A few months ago I had a customer come to me with a request. She said:
My 16 month old niece died this morning. Her poor family is torn apart, her mother has already had several late pregnancy miscarriages and this little angel was their last (of four). She arrived with severe mental and physical handicaps but she's been a piece of heaven for all that knew her. Her two sisters are grieving especially hard. I wanted to give all three girls a sister's necklace and incorporate the idea of angel, if possible.

My heart went out to this sweet family.

My own sister lost a child at birth and I remember how helpless I felt at the time, nothing I could do would make it better. And losing a child is the most difficult thing I can imagine having to go through!

It was a privilege being able to design a necklace for this sweet family.

Our new Angel Memorial Necklace incorporates two little domed discs that fit together to make a locket. An angel is stamped on the front, with a name and heart charm inside. ( If you'd like to order this necklace without the angel we can also just stamp a heart on the front.)

We hope that this necklace is something meaningful,
something that might help the tiniest bit for someone in need of comfort.

I have so many designs that I want to add
but I've been a bit preoccupied this year!
I totally forgot how much work babies are!!

but never found the perfect spoon to use...

Tutorial Tuesday: Shopping Cart cover

It's been a long winter, don't you think?
And every time my little guy gets sick it just makes it worse!
Every time I go to the store I wish I had a shopping cart cover,
to at least protect him from the germs on the icky shopping cart handle.

Now he doesn't usually last in the cart for long,
he usually tries to stand up in the cart after just a few minutes
and I usually end up holding him in my pouch sling for the rest of out shopping trip.

But a shopping cart cover really would come in handy once in a while,
so I loved seeing this tutorial over at the Bug Creator.

Perfect, if I could only find the time!

New fonts!

We now have uppercase letters and numbers available in our Playful font! When placing an order please be sure to specify whether you'd like both upper and lowercase, or just upper or lower on this font.

The Playful font set works on any of the designs in the shop, but won't fit as many letters as the standard uppercase type font.

And our newest stamp set is our Dancer font. This font will fit on all of the designs in the shop, but also won't fit as many letters as the standard uppercase type font. It is available in lowercase letters only right now.

I'm so excited about our new fonts, I hope you love them too!

Over Christmas break we've been doing some changes on our kitchen. We now have a new floor and new counters, which I am absolutely loving! But I will need some new artwork for the wall (and a backsplash one of these days too, but that will have to wait). I saw these "faux metal" art pieces over at Suzy's Artsy-Craftsy Sitcom and loved them.

Tutorial Tuesday: Christmas breakfast!

OK, so this is not really a tutorial but I wanted to share some yummy recipes that are perfect for Christmas morning. They are super easy and a lot of it can be done the night before to make it even faster to throw in the oven in the morning. You don't want to miss a moment of the fun!

Monkey Bread

3 (12 oz) packages refrigerated biscuit dough
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
½ cup margarine
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
½ cup raisins (optional)
Preheat oven to 350. Grease one 9 or 10 inch tube pan, bundt pans are perfect for this recipe. A spring ring pan wouldn’t be a good idea since the caramel could leak out of the pan.
Mix white sugar and cinnamon in a plastic bag. Cut biscuits into quarters. Shake 6-8 biscuit pieces in the sugar cinnamon mix. Arrange pieces in the bottom of the prepared pan. Continue until all biscuits are coated and placed in pan. If using nuts and raisins arrange them in and among the biscuit pieces as you go along.
In a small saucepan melt the margarine with the brown sugar over medium heat. Boil for 1 minute. Pour over the biscuits.
Bake at 350 for 35 minutes. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a plate. Do not cut, the bread just pulls apart.

Wake-Up Casserole

8 frozen hash brown patties
4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 pound cubed fully cooked ham
7 eggs
1 cup milk
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground mustard
Place hash brown patties in a single layer in a greased 9x13 baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese and ham. In a bowl beat eggs, milk, salt and mustard. Pour over ham. Cover and bake at 350 for 1 hour. Uncover, bake 15 minutes longer or until edges are golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

YUM!!

Tutorial Tuesday: Car Seat Swaddle Blanket

I don't know if it's cold where you all live, but it has been cold here!
OK, it's much warmer this week, but it has been really cold.
So I was browsing the internet for ideas on how to keep my baby warm
in his car seat. I found a really great idea!

This would really work best for a smaller baby,
my little guy's legs are already hanging over the edge of his car seat
and the blanket just didn't really cover him.

I found two great tutorial for this:
Visit Made By Marzipan (this one has a great little video that's extremely helpful)
or She Tries to Learn (I like the shape of this one better) for the tutorials.

Tutorial Tuesday: Tiny Christmas Trees

Thanksgiving weekend is usually the time
when we put up our Christmas tree
and all the holiday decorations.

This year we ordered a new tree
so we haven't put anything up yet,
but the kids cannot wait!

Maybe until our tree arrives
we could make some of these beautiful tiny trees.

Did you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving?
I hope so!

We didn't have to travel too far for dinner
and we came back home and relaxed.
The entire weekend was spent with family
and was just perfect.

We had the first significant snowfall of the season this weekend,
so we stayed inside and had indoor picnics,
did some Christmas shopping online,
and sipped hot chocolate.

We loved it!

We're back from vacation and we had a wonderful time!
My in-laws got to meet the baby for the first time
and they loved every minute of it!

We visited the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter
and my kids absolutely loved it (and we did too!).
We went to the beach several times and just had a great time.

Tutorial Tuesday: Display Board

My daughter loves making new art pieces.
And she loves displaying them in her room
all over her walls.
But I have a problem with the way she displays them--
she likes taping them to her walls
and they are a huge pain to remove.
Not to mention how cluttered her room can look

and they look like so much fun!

They're perfect for using at the pool
and also make bathtime lots of fun.

Tutorial Tuesday: Fabric Covered Cork Board

Sorry, this is just barely going to post on Tuesday so it's a bit late.
We've started soccer season here
and that means that almost every day
ends up being very busy!

Add a 5 month old baby to the mix,
and it's busier than ever before,
but still fun of course.

So we're in the process of making over our office.
One of my current projects is revamping an old cork board
to hang on the office wall.

I'm using this tutorial from Fresh Vintage.
And if when I finish it
maybe I'll add a picture of my finished project.

Tutorial Tuesday- Menu Board

Ever since my baby was born in April
I've had a hard time keeping up with my meal planning.

I used to go through my list of meals every month or so
and assign a different dinner for each night.

But now I have a better way to do it!

It all started when I saw
this cute menu board
from A Girl and a Glue Gun:

Brilliant! And SO super cute!
But I didn't know where to buy the blank calendar
that she used on the front of her menu board.

Then I saw these meal planning magnets
from the red chair blog:

I love the idea, but I really wanted something to put it on,
rather than my already cluttered fridge.

I saw this magnetic calendar from crafts keep me sane:

I loved the idea of using a cookie sheet!

And then I saw this cute menu board
from Heartland Paper:

LOVED IT!

So here is what I ended up doing...
I didn't want to spend a ton of money,
so I bought a cookie sheet from the dollar store.

I painted it with chalkboard paint.
I gave it 4 layers, letting it dry in between.
Then after 24 hours I followed the instructions
to cover it with chalk before writing on it.

I made my calendar with a ruler and a chalk marker.
(The chalk marker does leave faint lines even after wiping it off with a damp cloth,
a magic eraser helps take the rest off.)

Then I printed off a list of meals,
including some "eat out" options
as well as "try a new recipe".

I cut them out and mounted them on cute paper,
and attached a magnet to the back.
(I used a roll of self-adhesive magnets from the craft section at Walmart.)

The "What's For Dinner" sign I printed out from this pdf
from Heartland Paper.

So far I am loving it!

Tutorial Tuesday: School Days File Box

My kids start school tomorrow!
Every year the extra papers seem to clutter my house,
and we never know where to put everything.
So this school file box looks like a great idea to me!

This isn't technically a tutorial,
but I had to share it with you!

Just add a new folder for each grade,
and you have a place to store all the special papers from that year.
And I think I'll use it to store the current year's extra paperwork too!

Wow, sorry to be MIA almost the entire summer,
but these three have been keeping me super busy!

Especially this guy!

But school starts next week and hopefully we'll get on a better schedule.

And the shop is back open! I'm planning on closing it more often, whenever I need a little extra time to catch up on orders, but right now we're ready to go!

Keeping kids sharp during the summer

Summer vacation, educators say, is no time for parents to let their kids forget about academics. Research has shown that if you don’t keep your child’s brain working during this interlude, she could lose, on average, 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math skills and as much as a year’s reading level.

It's also important, however, to let kids relax and have fun during the summer. They can have a lot of stress during the school year so it's best to find a happy medium.

During past summers I have always scheduled time for flash cards, workbooks, and reading. But this summer I have slacked off and let it go. The good news is that it's not too late!

Some ways to keep your kids sharp during the summer:

1. Read, read, read. Stop by a bookstore during story hour. Sign up for a summer book club. Visit the library often and let your kids choose books that interest them. This summer my son has fallen in love with the Harry Potter books and is devouring them!

2. Give your kids a small allowance and have them budget out their money. If they're saving money to buy a specific toy have them figure out how long it will take before they have enough. This is a built-in math lesson.

3. Think of the kitchen as a math lab. Ask your child to help you cook and bake. The extra mess is well worth the effort of applying math concepts like measuring and figuring out fractions. Make it a game, too, by asking: How many pints in a quart?

4. During a road trip play “I Spy” to search road signs for numbers, colors and geometric shapes. For older children, estimate and calculate the travel time to your destination.

“This helps kids see the math all around them,” says Trena Wilkerson, associate professor of curriculum and instruction at Baylor University. “Parents can also incorporate these kinds of math-related activities as they visit community resources, such as museums, zoos and even the park.”

5. Turn any activity at home into a teachable moment. For example, beading jewelry with a young child helps support pattern recognition and counting. (Patterns were a huge part of the math curriculum for Kindergarten in our kids' school.) Have some letter beads? Have kids practice their spelling.

6. Conduct a science experiment at home. We love the PBS Zoom website, they have tons of fun ideas. like this color splash activity.

For younger kids try the Teaching Tiny Tots website, they have some fun ideas.

7. To keep writing skills sharp try the age old tradition of writing a letter. Kids can write a letter to a friend, or an out-of-town family member.

Or have them keep a journal to document the fun they're having during the summer.

8. Keep their creative juices flowing by doing some art projects. Art Projects for Kids is a great source for ideas, like this fireworks drawing:
9. Keep kids' memory sharp by playing a matching game. Whether you play one that's more difficult or a simple one like this, kids will have fun and won't even realize they're doing something educational!

10. Don't overlook the great educational computer games and websites out there! My kids used to love Reader Rabbit, and I loved that it was helping them learn.

I'm going to start implementing these during the rest of our summer plans.
It's never too late to learn!

We are having so much fun with our new little one.
He's 7 weeks old
and already 11 lbs 13 oz.
I can't believe how fast he's growing!

Me, 39 weeks pregnant:

Well, I no longer look like this!

And we had an extra Easter basket at our house this year!

We were thrilled to welcome baby Chase into the world
on Friday, April 2nd at 12:57am.
He weighed in at 8 lbs 6 oz, and was 21.5 inches long.
(I was glad he was a week early,
he was definitely big enough!)

We are all doing great and absolutely loving this little guy,
even when he does keep us up all night long!

PS Thanks for your patience in delays in my replies to questions. I just found out this week that I have gestational diabetes and I've spent much of the week meeting with doctors and dieticians to figure out how to manage it and what I need to do to modify my diet. So far it looks like I should be able to manage it with diet alone, which is great news! Any tips on meals or snacks that are diabetic friendly?

Tutorial Tuesday: Cloth Doll Diapers

My daughter is SO excited for her baby brother to come.
Tonight she told me that she's going to practice feeding and changing her dolls
so she'll be ready to help take care of him when he comes.

A few weeks ago we stopped by the
Hill Aerospace Museum.
I'd wanted to take my kids there before,
but it's not very close to where we live,
so we'd never been.

We finally made it there,
and my kids loved it!

We didn't really look around at the outside exhibits
because there was a lot of snow,
but it was amazing seeing so much history
at the inside exhibits.

Tutorial Tuesday: Maternity Skirt

I've had a hard time this pregnancy finding
cute maternity skirts
that don't cost a fortune.

It's been years since I last needed maternity clothing,
and I gave away most of what I had.
The leftovers were out of date
and nothing I really wanted to wear.

So a few weeks ago I decided
to look through my fabric stash
that hasn't been touched in quite a while.
As it turns out I had some cute fabric on hand,
so this project was easy and inexpensive!

(I think this skirt would really work for non-maternity too.)

I used this tutorial from See Mommy Sew for the basic idea.

The first part of this tutorial requires a pattern,
and I am not very gifted when it comes to following patterns.

So I grabbed a pre-pregnancy A-line skirt that I loved.
I measured my hips to make sure I could pull the skirt on
(the original skirt used a zipper so I definitely had to make it a bit bigger),
and I traced the basic shape of the original skirt onto my fabric
using half of my hip measurement for the top of the skirt
(the skirt was made of two pieces-- the front and the back).
I used a medium-weight fabric so I didn't have to line the skirt.

For the stretchy panel I actually decided to cut up some fitted t-shirts
that were in my "donation pile".
I just cut off the bottom half of the shirt.
I did have to add elastic to the top part,
but otherwise these skirts were SO easy!

OK, I know the panels don't exactly match, but I was using what I had.
And the panels are covered by a shirt anyway. :)
(And no, I didn't bother changing my thread either,
no one will ever see it when I'm wearing them...)

A super easy project!

There were some long days and nights,

Tutorial Tuesday: Extender slip

So I bought this dress online.
I love it, but it was just a little bit shorter
than I wanted it to be.

My cousin told me about an Extender slip that I could buy from Shade.
I went to the mall to check them out,
but they no longer carry them.

I like lots of the styles over at Vintage Hem,
but they didn't have exactly what I was looking for.
So I decided to try to make it myself.
(This is not the greatest tutorial,
but hopefully you'll at least get the idea!)

I started with this $5 slip from Walmart:

And $2 worth of black fabric.

I made 2 tubes of fabric, one for the front and one for the back.
They were about 1 1/2 times the width of the bottom of the slip.
I just sewed three sides, turned it right side out, and sewed up the last side:

I also needed to add a panel to the slit in the slip:

The hardest step was gathering the fabric before attaching it to the slip.
I did a basting stitch, and then held onto one end while gathering the fabric evenly
across the entire rectangle until it was just barely wider than the base of the slip:

I pinned the gathered tubes to the bottom of the slip,
and then sewed them all together.
And yes, I did sew the black rectangles together as well.

What do you think of the finished product?

It works exactly the way I was hoping it would!

Tutorial Tuesday

So are all of you ready for Christmas?
This has been a marathon week,
but I think I'm almost finished.

Gift cards were a quick and easy gift
for many people on my list this year.
But I don't love the typical presentation.
I sent a few gift cards inside greeting cards,
but I really wanted a small box for them--
to make them look like an actual gift.

So I did a little browsing...

(a great last-minute gift!)

And try this tutorial to recycle some of those old Christmas cards.
This little box is perfect for candy, jewelry,
or other small trinkets,
though it was too small to fit a typical sized gift card.
(I used someone's suggestion to
cut 1/4" off of the end of the bottom piece
to make sure the lid was slightly larger for a better fit,
and that worked great.)

Tutorial Tuesday: Placemat Purse!

So yes, I'm super late posting this.
In fact it probably won't even be Tuesday by the time it is up.
But today has been a working day, I've been getting all of your holiday orders out.
It has been keeping me crazy busy!
But hopefully you will all get your orders in time for Christmas.
